Well, I've only cosplayed three times before now... The very first time I went to an anime convention, I had a Pikachu shirt on, a Pikachu hat, and Pikachu face paint. Eugh, that doesn't even count. I don't know WHAT I was thinking.
The first time I (actually) cosplayed... Ohhh man. I dressed up as Rukia from Bleach. My hair is naturally brown, but my hairstyle was pretty accurate to Rukia's. I noticed that some people spray painted their hair when they cosplay. So, I bought some spray paint for hair. The thing is, it was just for highlights. Me, being the very inexperienced, cosplay-ignorant kid I was (still kinda am..) said "Eh, it doesn't matter." So, when the day of the convention came, I sprayed two whole cans of paint onto my hair. It looked fine(?) at first, but on the way there, I kept on touching my hair. Little did I know that the paint was smudging ALL OVER my face... When we got to the con, I looked at my reflection in one of the cars in the parking lot, and MAN was it bad. I looked like a Rukia that had just came out of a war, with soot all over her face. That may sound kinda cool, but it did NOT look cool at all. As the day went on, the paint just smudged even more. I had brought my comb along with me, used it, and that made my comb smell like strong spray paint for months! Ugh, it was really bad.
Alright, so my second cosplay attempt, I was Gaara from Naruto. A genderbent Gaara actually. I ordered a red wig, but it was very very very long. So I had to cut it... Well, I didn't actually HAVE to, I just chose to. Bad decision. The wig wasn't designed to be short, so when I cut it, it was really thin.
Now, for the outfit, I MADE it. I have a sewing machine, and I usually just stick to fixing holes and hemming clothes. I made a dress though... It was above my abilities. I mean it was wearable, but you could really tell I didn't buy it. And I mean REALLY tell. It looked really sloppily done, even though I took months to make it. Right now? It's sitting in my closet, waiting to rot.
I bought a bag that's supposed to be Gaara's gourd. It does look like it, but it's a bag. It's floppy and it folds. It's not made out of regular cloth though; it's some stiffer material that can keep its shape easily.
Also, I just used regular black sandals. Now for the makeup, that was another fail. I did have the eyeliner, but I didn't buy contacts or even attempt to conceal my eyebrows... And I'm a lot more tan than Gaara. So pretty much, I was a sad excuse for a genderbent Gaara, with thin hair, a horribly made outfit, a sort-of-flat gourd, brown eyes, really dark eyebrows, and tan skin. If you know how Gaara looks or you look up a pic of him, you can see how horribly off I was.
OK, so I'm actually proud of my latest cosplay. I was Konan from Naruto. I had everything for it: the wig, the cloak, the shoes, the makeup, the flower in the hair, even the lip piercing! It was just a magnet though. I'm not actually gonna get my bottom lip pierced! (Or will I... Nahhh.) Sure I was still a little tan for her, but I was really proud of my work. I'm thinking of making the little dress/cape she wears underneath her cloak too! It's not as difficult as a dress though. Should be pretty simple.
Well, I look forward to going to Fanime in two weeks for the whole weekend!
